Musthaves. A term completely ruined by social media, shallow consumerism and meaningless influencers. I never thought I would use it myself. But honestly? I think this BitByBit cutting board is one, hear me out...
For the past two years, ROOTS Exhibition has been bringing attention to PHA and other regenerative materials during Milano and Dutch Design Week .
With New Dawn, we explored the possibilities of PHA through the first large-scale 3D printed lighting object made from this biopolymer. And just a few weeks ago in Milano, we presented Zero Degrees by OXMAN — continuing the conversation around bio-fabrication, material ecology and regenerative design that pioneers like Professor Neri Oxman have been pushing forward for years.

Zero Degrees by OXMAN
During the exhibitions, I often asked visitors: What material do you think this is? Most people answered the same thing: plastic. And that is exactly why ROOTS exists: to rethink the materials we normalize and surround ourselves with every day.
PHA is a biopolymer naturally produced by microorganisms. Unlike conventional fossil-based plastics (or many so-called “bioplastics” that only break down under industrial conditions) PHA is fully biodegradable in nature. In soil. In compost. In rivers, seas and oceans. Without leaving harmful persistent microplastics behind.
And that changes everything. Because PHA is not just a material. It is a completely different way of thinking about production and design. You can 3D print it, inject it, cast it, weave it, knit it, extrude it, thermoform it. Use it for packaging, furniture, fashion, lighting, kitchenware and countless other applications. A lamp, an egg holder, a shoe, a cutting board — the possibilities are endless.
But in the end, it comes down to one thing: making conscious material choices and taking responsibility for the things we bring into the world. That is why I love seeing projects like this cutting board by BitByBit . A simple everyday object, made from 100% PHA and produced in the Netherlands. Exactly the kind of product that helps move better materials from exhibitions into daily life...
