What if aluminium was never waste, but part of an endless cycle?

At ROOTS, we highlight Hydro CIRCAL—a premium recycled aluminium made from at least 75% post-consumer scrap, with a COâ‚‚ footprint up to 97% lower than primary aluminium.

From discarded windows, façades, and everyday objects to new design and architectural applications, Hydro CIRCAL demonstrates how materials can continuously transform without losing quality or performance. What was once considered waste becomes a valuable resource—ready to re-enter the cycle again and again.

Aluminium is inherently circular: it can be recycled infinitely, using only 5% of the energy required for primary production. Yet achieving this at a high level is complex. It requires advanced sorting technologies, deep material knowledge, and precise control over complex waste streams.

Within this part of the exhibition, Studio Loop Loop presents a plant-based anodised Straw profile developed for Modular Lighting Instruments, demonstrating how circular aluminium can be combined with bio-based surface treatments. This collaboration explores not only how aluminium is sourced and recycled, but also how it can be finished in a more responsible, plant-based way—pushing the material further toward a regenerative future.

During the ROOTS Talk on Wednesday, Hydro, Studio Loop Loop and Modular Lighting Instruments come together to share insights into this process—revealing the challenges and opportunities of working with recycled aluminium, plant-based innovations and circular design systems.

At ROOTS, this represents a shift from extraction to regeneration—where materials are not consumed, but continuously reborn.
