Machiel Hopman

LC Ottoman '24 Walnut for Loads Collection

The LC Ottoman, designed by Machiel Hopman and released under the Loads Collection label, honors craftsmanship and sustainability with its robust geometric form and refined patchwork finish. From the biodynamic SEKEM cotton, dyed with natural pigments by Studio Claudy Jongstra, to the circular frame made of SAM-Pure board material, this piece celebrates nature's beauty and purity as a timeless and conscious alternative to fast-furniture.

Designer Machiel Hopman deliberately chose a pure, robust geometric form to optimize the strength and beauty of the pristine materials. This minimalist design lets the natural texture of Sekem cotton and depth of biodynamic colors speak for themselves, while refined detailing of seams and patchwork offers subtle contrast. This combination of simplicity and craftsmanship creates furniture that is both timeless and distinctive—functional while telling a story about material, craftsmanship, and sustainability.

The LC Ottoman comes in three colors—red, blue, and green—inspired by The Last Supper, the theme of Roots Exhibition Milano 2025. These deep, natural hues are created using Studio Claudy Jongstra's 100% natural dyes from biodynamic raw materials. The rich red utilizes the Tagetes plant, the deep blue comes from Woad leaves, and the vibrant green emerges from a carefully balanced mix of walnut and chamomile. This artisanal dyeing process enhances the cotton's purity while contributing to a sustainable production chain where color tells a story of origin, craftsmanship, and respect for nature.

The LC Ottoman is upholstered with biodynamic SEKEM cotton from Egypt, representing a deeper vision of sustainability and human dignity. This cotton is produced according to SKEM principles: sustainable development where individuals can reach their full potential, social structures based on respect and dignity, and economic activities conducted with ecological and ethical considerations. This conscious choice contributes to a fairer production chain where humans and nature work in balance.

The frame is constructed entirely from pine slats and SAM (Sustainable Advanced Materials) Pure board material—an innovative, sustainable material made from paper-based fibers and grass. SAM Panels are produced without chemical binders, using only water and pressure, it's completely formaldehyde-free and 100% recyclable. This material choice represents responsible production methods contributing to a circular economy, forming the ideal foundation for furniture that combines sustainability, innovation, and timeless design.

The LC Ottoman honors the ancient upholstery craft by emphasizing skilled workmanship and refined detailing. The distinctive patchwork design highlights the art of hand-assembling and upholstering furniture, seamlessly blending different materials and textures. Every seam, stitch, and fabric choice testifies to precision and tradition, while the construction underscores the value of sustainable reuse.

The patchwork design embodies not just craftsmanship but also a deeper appreciation for timelessness and repair. Each LC Ottoman comes with extra fabric on the underside, encouraging owners to add new patchwork elements when damage or stains occur. This allows the ottoman to evolve with time, carrying traces of its use as a living object. The LC Ottoman thus becomes not only a unique piece of furniture but also a powerful statement against the disposable culture of fast-furniture—time becomes an essential ingredient of the design, enriching the piece and making it increasingly personal and valuable.
