Emma Batsheva

Bal Tash'ritdesign methodology connecting materials, durability and identity

Bal Tash’rit is a Jewish precept meaning ‘do not waste’. Guided by this principle, Emma Batsheva creates an innovative design methodology that explores high quality materials through a sustainable lens. Taking into account the lifespan of leather and wood, and reducing leather waste by over 70% compared to the industry average, this set of furniture is an exploration of closed-loop material cycles and scalability that considers durability enhanced by craftsmanship. By using laser cutting, Emma makes use of most of the surface of the skin and removes imperfections locally to increase material usage. Resulting in a structure of discarded fragments that matches any design need and considerably reduces leather waste.

Through this systemic approach, the project maximises the potential of natural materials and minimises waste. Using vegetable-tanned leather, an intricate pattern of interlocking laser-cut elements forms a modular material through stitchless assemblage. Combining carpentry and leathercraft, durable furniture without hardware or stitching is created as a proof of concept for this methodology.

About Emma Batsheva

Emma is an Artist-Designer. At 23, she graduated with Cum Laude from Design Academy Eindhoven. Batsheva is on a mission to (re)design systems by shaping Objects, Spaces, Visuals & Concepts to minimize waste(s) and maximize potential(s). Her playground is at the crossroads of design, collectible art and fashion.

As a Designer, Emma dedicates her practice to merging contemporary techniques with craftsmanship, focusing on durability enhanced by artisanal gestures. As an Artist, she weaves materials, systems, and aesthetics both in the physical and digital world.

Objective

Emma fosters a commitment to shaping and experimenting with different techniques and innovative materials while paying tribute to her identity. Despite navigating diverse fields and scales, Emma’s focus remains on the core principles of durability and sustainability. Her creations embody both her cultural heritage and environmental consciousness.

Process

Emma’s playground is fueled by a search for effective usage of ressources in pursuit of a positive impact on artisanal production processes.

She explores closed-loop material cycles and scalable solutions that prioritize craftsmanship. By collaborating with skilled artisans, she examines each machine, tool, and gesture to generate new production systems—modern expressions of sustainability and nature- inclusive designs. Through her work, she continually discovers new perspectives across scales, spaces, and senses.
