Dirk van der Kooij
Shaping the future of spaces through sustainable concrete designs
Innovative Approach to Material Use
Dutch designer Dirk van der Kooij has revolutionized the design industry by pioneering the use of recycled plastics in 3D printing. By repurposing discarded materials, he transforms waste into functional art pieces, exemplifying a commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Roots Exhibition Milano: Showcasing Sustainable Creations
At the Roots Exhibition Milano, van der Kooij presents a selection of his groundbreaking designs, including the Chubby Chair, Staple Stool and Tol and Satellite Lamp. These pieces highlight his unique technique of 3D printing with recycled plastics, offering a fresh perspective on material reuse and design aesthetics.
Chubby Chair: A Fusion of Function and Art
The Chubby Chair is a testament to van der Kooij's innovative approach. Crafted from recycled plastic, this chair features gentle undulations that enhance light refraction, creating a visual effect reminiscent of cut crystal. Its design not only challenges traditional furniture aesthetics but also underscores the potential of recycled materials in high-end design. Each chair is unique, with color achieved by sporadically introducing pigment to the extruder, resulting in one-of-a-kind color expressions. For the Roots Exhibition, special Roots editions of the Chubby Chair were created in earthy tones, reflecting the exhibition's deep connection to the soil and natural materials.
Tol Lamp: Illuminating Innovation
The Tol Lamp exemplifies van der Kooij's ability to merge functionality with artistic expression. Constructed from recycled plastics and brass fixtures, the lamp features concentric designs that scatter light, creating a mesmerizing effect. This piece exemplifies how recycled materials can be transformed into functional art that enhances interior spaces.

Staple Stool
The Staple stool quietly celebrates the qualities inherent to recycled plastic. Namely, the material’s ability to bend without sacrificing structural integrity. Multi-functional as a stool or side table, the understated U-shape places expressive patterning at the fore. Free from joins or reinforcements, the Staple embraces plastic’s ability to stand alone as a mono-material.

Satelite
The Satellite was originally designed as a shell to envelope and showcase its humble light source. Three standard-sized fluorescent rings composed the heart of the lamp. Their attraction was simple: in 2013, fluorescent bulbs could be found in a variety of light temperatures, whilst LED bands remained overwhelmingly chilly. When seeking to mix light temperatures in a single vessel, the fluorescent bulbs proved to be the most logical option. The hills and valleys of low-resolution 3D printing serve to distort and blend the individual bands of light.

In early 2020, the design was reconfigured with warm, unfussy LEDs. The shell remains unchanged: whilst the technology has evolved, the sentimental form persists. Two tactile knobs on the side of the vessel control the LEDs. With these, the balance of cool and warm light can be manipulated.
Sustainability at the Core
Van der Kooij's dedication to sustainability is evident in his use of recycled plastics, diverting waste from landfills and reducing the need for new materials. His work challenges the design industry to reconsider material sourcing and production processes, promoting a circular economy and environmental responsibility.
Through his innovative use of recycled plastics and 3D printing technology, Dirk van der Kooij has established himself as a leader in sustainable design. His creations, showcased at the Roots Exhibition in Milan, not only highlight the aesthetic potential of recycled materials but also inspire a shift towards more sustainable practices in the design world.
