Simone van Es
Silphium Perforliatum
Presenting a relatively new richly blooming crop in The Netherlands; Silphium Perforliatum (Silphy). A bee-friendly fibre crop offering sustainable solutions for agriculture, building and design. Its late flowering provides essential nourishment for bees and bumblebees, helping them survive the winter while supporting biodiversity. Silphy fields, alive with birds, butterflies, and clear waters, remind us how nature can thrive with care. Beyond supporting pollinators, Silphy is a toxin-free, bio-based material used for developing water-resistant, biodegradable building materials and furniture. It exemplifies regenerative farming, offering Dutch farmers a sustainable alternative that reduces dependence on imports and contributes to soil restoration and eco-conscious design innovation.
Simone collaborated with Piet Hein Eek who is presenting Stackable Stools made of the Silhy-plate material from her research. ROOTS Exhibition stimulates the planting of the crop for both its natural and financial regenerative value.
