In a memorable past session at the Eindhoven Innovation Café, Simone van Es, founder of the Roots Foundation, inspired audiences with her vision for sustainable design rooted in nature. Alongside Linde van Vlijmen of Back to the Flax, Simone explored the transformative potential of Silphium Perfoliatum (Silphy) and flax—two crops at the forefront of Dutch bio-based circular innovation.

The event celebrated the mission of the Roots Foundation to connect farmers, designers, manufacturers, and builders in forging sustainable pathways. Simone highlighted the role of Silphy, a bee-friendly fiber crop with groundbreaking applications in agriculture, building, and design. Through her curation of ‘From Dutch Soil,’ she demonstrated how regenerative farming practices can empower both pollinators and industries, exemplifying the potential for a nature-inspired future.

Linde van Vlijmen shared insights from Back to the Flax, a project breathing new life into flax as a versatile and eco-friendly material. Through research and experimentation, the project reintroduced this traditional crop into contemporary contexts, paving the way for innovative, sustainable applications.

Moderated by Charlotte Grün, the session underscored the importance of collaboration and bold ideas in creating a more sustainable world. The dialogue offered a glimpse into the pioneering work being done to unite tradition and technology, showcasing how materials like Silphy and flax can shape a regenerative future for design and beyond.

This past event left a lasting impression, fueling the Roots Foundation’s mission to inspire sustainable innovation through collaboration and creativity.
